What My Kids Think I Do All Day
Hi there.
“My dad works on his computer to call his friends and co-workers.”
Having kids is the greatest blessing anyone could ask for. My daughter is 5 and my son is 2, and when they came into my life: bottomless joy. They are sincerely two of my favorite people in the entire world, and I get to help them learn, grow and eventually human on their own. I could do an entire blog on just that, but for today, I want to focus on their perception of what I do every day.
At my previous job, my kiddos thought that I sat in an office and talked to my friends at the bank all day. They knew that they could go into my workplace and get a sucker. And they knew that there were tons and tons of “Daddy’s work” around our town and area. I’d have to keep correcting them by saying, “Daddy doesn’t work there too often,” or “Daddy works in a different branch, but it’s the same company.”
Whenever my daughter asks what I do, I always say:
“I help people make wise decisions with money.” She still gives me a questioning look, so I always transition with: “And where does money come from?”
“Work,” she always says with an elaborate sigh. “You always ask me that!”
“It’s important!” I jokingly yell back. “So I help teach people how to use their money well, and get it to work for them.” She may not get it yet, but it’ll sink in. She’s smart, and I know her brother is picking it up too.
When I started building this enterprise, my daughter asked me: “Where is your job now?” I get to gesture around our whole house. “So you’re just at home all day now?” “Home all day – working.” She just eyed me suspiciously.
They’re not wrong about the location, there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes. I’m excited to throw the doors open and start this thing for real. It’s going to align a lot closer to what I told her about what I used to do: “I help people make wise decisions with their money by teaching them how it works for them.”
Until next time, God Bless.
